Hello

Although restrictions are being lifted across the country, Hybrid working looks like it is here to stay. Many home offices have been hastily constructed to be a short-term solution to find they are now a permanent fixture. This will mean that the technology used will have to be up to standard to help the quality of your work continue to be the best it can be.

D-Link

D-Link provides a range of networking devices to improve your working experience, whether at home or office. An increasing number of businesses are purchasing integrated IoT devices, IP cameras, voice assistants such as Google Home or Alexa, smart lights… the list goes on.

It is essential for many of us that our work environment is one of connectivity and efficiency, and D-Link can help achieve that goal.

5G

Since EE launched the UK’s first 5G service in May 2019 in select cities, this new wireless technology has arrived in several more cities in recent months. It couldn’t have come at a better time, as the pandemic has increased device usage considerably. In 2020, internet usage in the UK more than doubled, primarily due to remote working, video calls, and online gaming.

Unleash the full power of 5G and Wi-Fi 6 wherever you are with D-Link. 5G allows users to watch 4K movies, download massive files quickly, and stream high-quality content without irritating lag or buffering. D-Link 5G routers are built with mobile failover, whether at home or in the office. If your broadband connection cuts out unexpectedly, you remain connected to the internet through the router’s mobile connection. Say goodbye to unwelcome internet outages! You’re always connected with D-Link.

D-Link Hubs

D-Link Hubs can mean you now can massively expand your working capabilities all with one USB port. You can directly connect a second display to a 4K HDMI port for video up to 4K resolution with no lag or buffering. You can transfer data at 5GBps, which is ideal for sharing from USB drives, phones, tablets, cameras and other peripheries.

If your device comes with a thunderbolt three-port, you can transfer data, deliver power or extend your display in seconds. You can deliver up to 100w of energy through the Hub to your Laptop by connecting your USB-C charger to the USB-C port.

Instantly connect SD/MicroSD/SDHC/SDXC cards to the hub ad make fast data transfers of photos and videos. Charge your USB devices faster using the latest in USB 3.0 technology.

Our D-link Hubs are compatible with Mac, Windows and Linux and come with a two-year D-Link warranty.

Security

After an unwelcome rise in burglaries over the past few years, businesses must reconsider the current security measures currently in place. Security cameras are vital tools that allow companies to protect their property and employees. Footage can be used for many reasons: to make insurance claims and validate reports of workplace incidents, car accidents, theft, and more. Organisations must purchase high-quality, reliable security cameras that can capture incidents. D-Link lenses use high-quality glass for superior images. Vital details such as number plates can be captured in full HD clarity, even at maximum zoom.

The climate crisis has been pushed to the forefront of the public eye. People are making environmentally-friendly changes in their everyday lives, changing from single-use plastics to more permanent and sustainable solutions, such as beeswax paper, re-usable cotton buds or cotton rounds. According to statista.com, the volume of household waste collected by local authorities in England was 23 million metric tonnes in the 2019/2020 financial year.

Why eco-friendly changes are necessary

The technological industry is under pressure to reduce waste and emissions. In 2016, the global greenhouse gas released was at an average of 49.4 tonnes CO2 eq. However, researchers have recently claimed that previous calculations of ICT’s share of global greenhouse emissions, […], likely fall short of the sector’s real climate impact as they only show a partial picture.

In the UK alone, Commercial and Industrial (C&I) waste accounted for almost a fifth (19%) of total waste generation in 2018, with electrical and electronic equipment accounting for just over 250,000 metric tonnes of waste. Nevertheless, the recycling rate of electrical and electronic waste did increase by nearly 25% to a total of 67% overall.

Although the UK has seen this rate continue to increase, drastic changes need to be made worldwide. Big-name companies such as Apple have started to lead the way, already promising to reduce emissions by 2025.

Why you should choose upgrades instead of a new system

Smaller companies looking to cut back can still do their part to help. Origin Storage is fully stocked with trustworthy parts that are fully compatible across multiple systems and won’t invalidate your OEM warranty. We work with many trusted and well-known names across the board, such as Dell, QSAN, DataLocker and Secure Data.

Your system might be going on the fritz; things aren’t running as they should; it’s slower than dial-up internet was. Nobody wants that, especially if you are trying to run a business or handle sensitive and confidential information. The first thought might be to replace it with the shinier, newer option that comes with a million bells and whistles. This could be an option, but Origin Storage can make the more eco-friendly way accessible.

How to know when to upgrade your system?

You will know the time is right when those pesky security updates stop popping up. This means that the manufacturers have stopped supplying you with the current updates. At this point, your computer is too much at risk to be safe to continue use. Certain manufacturers will push the new model onto you, but we recommend reviewing your options first. Here at Origin Storage, we’re happy to talk you through upgrade solutions that align with your business needs.

By choosing to upgrade your system, you are helping to reduce the tonnes of waste and greenhouse gases emitted in the manufacturing process of new electricals and saving yourself money by buying one or two parts instead of a whole new set-up. Choosing to upgrade your system comes with other benefits, too, such as prolonging the life of your system and running with better efficiency than ever.

We’re here to assist you

Upgrading your system can sound like hard work, but our highly skilled team of experts are well versed in the inner workings of all things technological. Our team can help you with every step and ensure that your system is working as good as new.

If you need any advice on upgrading your system, pleased don’t hesitate to contact our Sales team. Or find out more here about our options.

Unfortunately, the parts shortage which has been happening since the beginning of 2020 is still with us and is likely to be with us for some time.

Nvidia’s CFO Colette Kress explained that the company expects demand to “continue to exceed supply for much of this year”. Similarly, chip manufacturer TSMC, who makes processors for Apple, Qualcomm, and AMD, has warned that shortages could continue into 2022. Intel’s chief executive, Pat Gelsinger, says the worst is yet to come and that we may have to wait a year or two until supplies return to normal. Glenn O’Donnell, a vice president research director at Forrester, believes the shortage could last until 2023. The general consensus is that the world will have to grapple with the crisis for longer yet.

The semiconductor shortage, what some are calling “chipageddon”, has affected a variety of industries. Manufacturers of graphics cards, kitchen appliances, phones, cars, computers, and games consoles struggle to get a hold of semiconductors essential to electronic devices. You can learn more about the origins of the semiconductor shortage here

Chipageddon continues

“Chipageddon” is a result of a variety of factors. Coronavirus lockdowns in China caused production to reduce significantly for a period of months at a time when demand for everything that kept us entertained during lockdowns, such as TVs, games consoles, phones, and other electronics, skyrocketed. It is the perfect storm, and it’s meant that prices of electronics have increased, and almost everyone will be affected by it in some way, shape, or form.

Parts

Stockpiling and new cryptocurrency increase demand

The situation shows no signs of abating just yet. Stockpiling has made the situation worse for firms that are struggling to get hold of precious chips. Some Chinese companies which have been affected by sanctions have taken to stockpiling in-demand chips in an attempt to ride out the crisis, intensifying the crisis for companies all over the world.

Stockpiling isn’t the only thing causing significant increases in demand. The cryptocurrency Chia, which was launched in May of this year, caused SSD demand to skyrocket. Chia relies on storage rather than processing performance to mine, and crypto-fanatics were keen to buy up huge amounts of storage to mine the cryptocurrency.

Manufacturers desperately search for a solution

Chipageddon is causing chaos for industries all over the world, and the leading semiconductor manufacturers are working hard to improve the supply of products. For example, The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., one of the leading advanced semiconductor suppliers, is planning to spend approximately $100 billion over the next three years to increase its capacity to meet demand.

A report has found that half of all government spending on computers is dedicated to keeping old systems going. The BBC recently revealed that the government spends £2.3 billion patching up systems, some of which date back as far as 30 years. A Cabinet Office report, Organising for Digital Delivery, warns that the government could spend between £13bn and £22bn over the next five years on obsolete systems, and the sum will only continue to grow as time goes on.

Additionally, a report by the UK National Audit Office report said some government digital services “fail to meet even the minimum cyber-security standards, while others are not fit for purpose and rely on outdated infrastructure, making them vulnerable to cyber-attacks and breaches”.

The news of outdated systems and the associated security risks is concerning from both an efficiency and a security standpoint and may resonate with some businesses experiencing similar problems. The threat of a cyberattack is particularly worrying for organisations, but they happen all too often. The 2021 Cyber Security Breaches Survey found that four in ten businesses reported having cyber security breaches or attacks between March 2020 and March 2021.

Companies need to heed the government’s warning and take sufficient action to ensure their own systems are fit for purpose. The pandemic only accelerated digitisation, and more of the work employees do across all sectors is digital in its nature. The rapid increase in data processing means a growing demand for increasingly powerful devices, and some businesses are struggling to keep up.

How can businesses provide employees with powerful devices in a cost-effective manner?

Upgrade systems rather than replacing them entirely.

Businesses must do all they can to ensure employees are working with functional devices, especially as remote working remains widespread across the UK. The best way to provide employees with powerful, up-to-date devices without spending vast sums of money is to upgrade devices rather than replacing them. It is also more sustainable as you’re using fewer materials; it’s a win-win!

Don’t have the expertise to upgrade devices in-house? We can help.

Older devices regularly run into a range of issues such as insufficient memory and storage, damaged ports, broken keyboards, cracked screens, and more. But many devices are salvageable with a few chosen upgrades.

We offer a range of upgrade and repair services such as SSD and HDD upgrades, storage upgrades, as well keyboard and laptop screen replacements. We have a purpose-built upgrade facility where our technicians work with your system using compatible products to make them more powerful and efficient.

Is your computer running slowly? Or perhaps it keeps crashing? You might need to upgrade your memory. Maybe your files are also saving slower than usual? Are you receiving read-only errors? These are signs you need to replace your SSD.

Why not upgrade your RAM and SSD at the same time? Discussions often revolve around whether you should upgrade your memory or SSD, but upgrading at the same time has a range of benefits.

Why should you upgrade your RAM?

A RAM upgrade is one of the easiest and most accessible ways to upgrade your PC as it delivers an instant performance boost. If your device is slowing down, a RAM upgrade may be necessary. Suppose you’re finding that your device is struggling to cope with running several programs at once. In that case, a RAM upgrade will allow you to use more programs at once, browse faster, see a boost in network capabilities, and have a better gaming experience. If you want to have a significant boost to your browsing capabilities, photo-editing and mid-range gaming, we’d recommend an upgrade to 8GB RAM. If you’re planning to run more intensive programs that require some serious computing power, 16GB might be more suitable. The more RAM, the better.

Why should you upgrade your SSD?

If your device is booting up slowly, struggles to open a new program, or finds moving files around difficult, an SSD upgrade is recommended. SSDs also have a range of benefits which mean they are a better option than an HDD. If you’re conscious about how much power your device uses, an SSD uses less power than an HDD and does not contain any moving parts that may mean the device is more susceptible to breaking. Additionally, SSDs are quieter to run, typically have a longer lifespan than HDDs, sometimes two to three times longer due to their shock resistance.

The main benefit of upgrading both the RAM and the SSD simultaneously is the boost in performance in terms of speed and efficiency. If your device is struggling, upgrading the RAM and SSD will improve performance significantly and saves you the task of opening up your device twice.

Upgrade your device with Origin Storage

We offer a wide range of RAM and SSDs which are 100% compatible and do not invalidate OEM warranty. You can browse our various memory solutions here. Pre-pandemic, a record number of businesses were choosing to work remotely or at least offer flexible working to their employees. As of October 2020, 24% of those employed in the UK were working remotely, mainly due to the coronavirus pandemic. When an employee starts working from home, the employer should provide them with a device that will allow them to do their job adequately. However, the task of equipping remote employees with suitable devices was a challenge for employers up and down the country.

Remote working brings new challenges

An issue that arose in March, when millions of people began working from home almost immediately, was that many did not have access to a suitable device for the work they were doing. Employers did not have sufficient time to weigh up the best options regarding devices. Many employers will have purchased affordable laptops and desktops that may not have the correct requirements for the work their employees are doing. The situation was intensified further by a temporary shortage of devices due to a sudden surge in demand and supply chain disruptions in China.

Thankfully, the supply chain problems were soon fixed and demand began to slow down. However, many employers will now be looking to replace the devices that their employees are currently using. In many cases, replacing devices completely is unnecessary. Unfortunately, approximately 49,000,000 tons of electric waste has been thrown out in 2020. That is like throwing away 800 laptops every second! Why throw away devices that are slightly damaged when they could be repaired and made more powerful by our expert team for an affordable price?

The Origin Storage Configuration Service

Our custom Configuration Services give resellers, and by extension employers, the ability to save money by having devices upgraded quickly and affordably. Our Configuration Services allow resellers to offer their customers updates to systems and/or custom repairs, which ensures that customers are getting a service that is both personalised and excellent value. 2020, as you know, was a turbulent year by all accounts. The coronavirus pandemic prompted a massive increase in public spending as the economy plunged into the deepest recession on record, leaving many facing financial hardship. In November 2020, HM Treasury published the Spending Review 2020, which prioritises funding to support the government’s response to Covid-19 and invest in the UK’s economic recovery. What is clear from the Spending Review is that the government plans to invest in economic recovery for all regions of the UK to build a stronger future for all citizens. As a result, Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak announced plans to deliver over £600 billion of public investment over the next five years to help the country recover from the health crisis.

Technology is a clear priority.

Among other things, the Spending Review focuses on the importance of technology in a range of sectors. The government have pledged to invest over £600 million to fix outdated government IT, which has caused problems in recent years and will likely have slowed overall efficiency. The funding increases will affect HMRC who will receive £268m, the Home Office who will receive £232m, £40m for the Ministry of Justice, and £64 million for the Department of Education. The government has said that the investment “reduce the risk of failures, improves efficiency and ultimately means a better service for the public.”

How can the government bring public sector technology up to date affordably?

Upgrade, don’t replace.

The best way to provide the public sector with powerful, up-to-date devices without spending more money than is necessary is to upgrade devices rather than buying new ones. As we mentioned in a previous article, the last thing the public sector needs during an economic crisis is a drop in productivity and efficiency due to sub-standard devices. One of the most common problems with devices is that they are simply too slow. No matter how tidy a device is, hard drives fill up over time. As a hard drive becomes close to capacity, it will significantly affect the speed of a device. At Origin Storage, we offer a range of storage solutions to suit a wide range of devices, old or new. There’s no need to replace the device altogether!

Upgrade memory with our upgrades service.

Another reason why devices might be slow and struggle to run a number of applications at once might be because they require more memory. The good news about memory upgrades is that they can be done relatively cheaply. The Origin Storage upgrades service is ideal for those who need a number of devices upgrading but aren’t sure where to start. We have a purpose-built upgrade facility where our technicians will work with systems using compatible, affordable products. Even better, the upgrade service won’t affect OEM warranties, and other necessary upgrades can be completed while the device is with us for a memory upgrade.

Here at Origin Storage, we’ve got everything needed for a device to run efficiently without needing to break the bank. To find out more about our services or to speak to a member of our specialist team, click here.

In March, the coronavirus lockdown threw businesses into disarray. Millions of people began working from home if they could, and businesses had to scramble to find suitable devices for them to be able to work from home. The issue with sudden change is that there is not sufficient time to weigh up the best options regarding devices. Many employers will have purchased affordable laptops and desktops that may not have the correct requirements for the work their employees are doing.

One study conducted one month into the UK lockdown found that almost a fifth of workers said the quality of the laptop, desktop or tablet they were using for work was negatively affecting their productivity. The last thing that companies need during a global pandemic, which has led to a deep recession, is a dramatic drop in productivity. Businesses must provide their employees with devices that enable them to complete their work to a high standard and do not negatively impact their productivity. The problem is that new devices are expensive and delivery times can be long,  especially when demand is high.

The solution is simple: don’t buy new devices, upgrade them!

You might be thinking ‘how can I upgrade devices affordably?’ Here’s how…

SSDs

An SSD is the best upgrade you can give a device, and prices have reduced significantly over the years. In 2012, for example, SSD prices halved in less than a year. The primary benefit of SSDs over  HDDs is their speed. This means that devices with SSD’s boot faster, have quicker file transfer speeds. In March, when the lockdown began, the chances are that many employers bought portable devices, but may not contain the best SSD for the work employees are undertaking. Here at Origin Storage, we offer affordable SSD’s that are 100% compatible with devices that do not invalidate OEM warranties. By updating devices with new, more powerful SSD’s, employers can save hundreds of pounds without compromising on computing power.

Memory

As we discussed in a previous article, memory upgrades are essential if a system has been routinely upgraded over time. As operating systems progress, they need more memory to run efficiently. By upgrading a device’s memory, rather than buying a whole new system, employers can improve the user experience for their employees, which leads to increased productivity. Origin Storage offers a wide range of memory which, like our SSD’s, is 100% compatible and does not invalidate OEM  warranty.

Travel docks

Many people prefer laptops over desktops due to their portability; however, some laptops may have limited USB ports, meaning other devices cannot be attached seamlessly. Origin Storage offers a  wide range of docking station solutions, and our portfolio is still growing in order to continue to provide a solution for every situation. An increasing number of people now work from home or anywhere with internet connectivity. As a result, it is more important than ever that they use devices that work seamlessly. With Origin Storage’s range of docking solutions, users can plug in numerous devices at a time through HDMI, ethernet, and USB-C ports. This means that individuals can connect their laptop to a monitor, have a stable internet connection and use other USB enabled devices all at the same time.

There are numerous benefits to upgrading devices rather than buying new ones: saving money,  improve device power and efficiency, and save parts from being thrown away needlessly.

Our custom upgrade services give resellers the power they need to compete on a larger scale, and their customers and end-users go on to enjoy the benefits of our expertise. Get in touch with us today to discuss your upgrade requirements in more detail.
