Unfortunately, the parts shortage which has been happening since the beginning of 2020 is still with us and is likely to be with us for some time. 

Nvidia’s CFO Colette Kress explained that the company expects demand to “continue to exceed supply for much of this year”. Similarly, chip manufacturer TSMC, who makes processors for Apple, Qualcomm, and AMD, has warned that shortages could continue into 2022. Intel’s chief executive, Pat Gelsinger, says the worst is yet to come and that we may have to wait a year or two until supplies return to normal. Glenn O’Donnell, a vice president research director at Forrester, believes the shortage could last until 2023. The general consensus is that the world will have to grapple with the crisis for longer yet.

“Chipageddon” is a result of a variety of factors. A report has found that half of all government spending on computers is dedicated to keeping old systems going. The BBC recently revealed that the government spends £2.3 billion patching up systems, some of which date back as far as 30 years. A Cabinet Office report, Organising for Digital Delivery, warns that the government could spend between £13bn and £22bn over the next five years on obsolete systems, and the sum will only continue to grow as time goes on.

Additionally, a report by the UK National Audit Office report said some government digital services “fail to meet even the minimum cyber-security standards, while others are not fit for purpose and rely on outdated infrastructure, making them vulnerable to cyber-attacks and breaches”.

2020, as you know, was a turbulent year by all accounts.
