NVMe’s have made the limitations of SATA protocol more and more apparent as new and emergent technology arrives on the tech market. NVMe SSDs are trailblazing their way into the front and centre of the public eye. By connecting directly to the servers CPUs through the PCI express interface bus, they bypass entirely the host bus adapters (HBAs) that SATA drives require. 

Are NVMe’s the future?

With the way things are heading, it is predicted that NVMe adoption will grow by 91% by the end of 2023. NVMe is the storage technology you want for your current or next PC. The continued evolvement of the NVMe standard means that, as well as the present version 1.31, new features such as the ability to use your computer’s system memory as a cache. 

The NVMe SSD inside the latest Macbook Pro reads and writes data four times faster than the SATA SSD’s found in the previous generations and seeks out information ten times as fast. In March 2011, the NVMe specifications were developed by the NVM Express Workgroup, which consisted of more than 90 companies. Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) enables the communication between the processor and the storage device to occur quickly. It took some time for NVMe to emerge in the market, but it is now common technology. In 2020, the global NVMe market was valued at approximately $44.6 billion and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 29.7%, leading to a valuation of $163.5 billion by 2025. The future of NVMe Storage

The migration to SSDs using flash as the primary storage device is a major break from the prior dominance of rotating devices.
