Hello

It is sometimes unclear which are the key functions of the UPS system and generator in crucial power protection schemes. Furthermore, lithium-ion batteries can turn uninterruptible electric supplies into energy storage systems. How do UPS generators differ?

What is a UPS battery?

A device powered by a battery provides a backup power supply to help when there is a power outage. An uninterruptible power supply or UPS is offered in various sizes. In some cases, small UPS systems can be used for backup for just minutes that can shut down the computer and recover the data, while larger systems use batteries that will run various electrical systems for a few hours at the same time.

We recommend using an electrical power supply without interruption for mains power supply failures or for hardware failures. If power fails, the battery is taken up as the primary power source. A power supply battery is designed in such a way that it is possible to provide high currents over short periods. Hence when determining which UPS battery you will use, you must follow several parameters.

Uninterruptible power backup

Uninterruptible electricity sources help in cases of power outages. UPS has three types: online, interactive, offline, and a standing call service.

Line-based or offline equipment provides supplemental battery power when mains electricity fails or fluctuates outside of predetermined limits. The UPS may contain spike filtering with electrical noise filtering, and the interconnection UPS will include automatic voltage stabilisers. The stabilising voltage elements may be electronic and tap change transformers and help to reduce brownouts and surges at the main electrical supply.

Choosing the right UPS battery

UPS batteries are essential to an Uninterruptible Electricity Supply (UPS) and are selected carefully, as they are important for preventing electricity interruptions. If you want to upgrade an existing Dell or Belkin UPS Battery, we will show you what it means, and our experts will be able to explain it to help you decide!

A generator may have a transfer switch

When you think generators are adequate, in the event of power failure, think again. Generators typically use a transfer switch that powers computers, lighting, interior lighting, or other crucial electrical circuitry in the building. A power converter switches to power supply a box that looks like a power outlet on either end of a building. You can plug the generator into a power supply in case of power failure. Ensure that the switch to “off” is enabled for this operation. So start the generator and temporarily recharge the critical circuit.

A UPS protects against power surges

A UPS provides backup power and can identify and solve energy-related issues, power grid malfunctions, and various other unstable factors in power supply. Similarly, a UPS would be an excellent solution to protect computer equipment from power failures.

Unfortunately, the parts shortage which has been happening since the beginning of 2020 is still with us and is likely to be with us for some time.

Nvidia’s CFO Colette Kress explained that the company expects demand to “continue to exceed supply for much of this year”. Similarly, chip manufacturer TSMC, who makes processors for Apple, Qualcomm, and AMD, has warned that shortages could continue into 2022. Intel’s chief executive, Pat Gelsinger, says the worst is yet to come and that we may have to wait a year or two until supplies return to normal. Glenn O’Donnell, a vice president research director at Forrester, believes the shortage could last until 2023. The general consensus is that the world will have to grapple with the crisis for longer yet.

The semiconductor shortage, what some are calling “chipageddon”, has affected a variety of industries. Manufacturers of graphics cards, kitchen appliances, phones, cars, computers, and games consoles struggle to get a hold of semiconductors essential to electronic devices. You can learn more about the origins of the semiconductor shortage here

Chipageddon continues

“Chipageddon” is a result of a variety of factors. Coronavirus lockdowns in China caused production to reduce significantly for a period of months at a time when demand for everything that kept us entertained during lockdowns, such as TVs, games consoles, phones, and other electronics, skyrocketed. It is the perfect storm, and it’s meant that prices of electronics have increased, and almost everyone will be affected by it in some way, shape, or form.

Stockpiling and new cryptocurrency increase demand

The situation shows no signs of abating just yet. Stockpiling has made the situation worse for firms that are struggling to get hold of precious chips. Some Chinese companies which have been affected by sanctions have taken to stockpiling in-demand chips in an attempt to ride out the crisis, intensifying the crisis for companies all over the world.

Stockpiling isn’t the only thing causing significant increases in demand. The cryptocurrency Chia, which was launched in May of this year, caused SSD demand to skyrocket. Chia relies on storage rather than processing performance to mine, and crypto-fanatics were keen to buy up huge amounts of storage to mine the cryptocurrency.

Manufacturers desperately search for a solution

Chipageddon is causing chaos for industries all over the world, and the leading semiconductor manufacturers are working hard to improve the supply of products. For example, The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., one of the leading advanced semiconductor suppliers, is planning to spend approximately $100 billion over the next three years to increase its capacity to meet demand.

A report has found that half of all government spending on computers is dedicated to keeping old systems going. The BBC recently revealed that the government spends £2.3 billion patching up systems, some of which date back as far as 30 years. A Cabinet Office report, Organising for Digital Delivery, warns that the government could spend between £13bn and £22bn over the next five years on obsolete systems, and the sum will only continue to grow as time goes on.

Additionally, a report by the UK National Audit Office report said some government digital services “fail to meet even the minimum cyber-security standards, while others are not fit for purpose and rely on outdated infrastructure, making them vulnerable to cyber-attacks and breaches”.

The news of outdated systems and the associated security risks is concerning from both an efficiency and a security standpoint and may resonate with some businesses experiencing similar problems. The threat of a cyberattack is particularly worrying for organisations, but they happen all too often. The 2021 Cyber Security Breaches Survey found that four in ten businesses reported having cyber security breaches or attacks between March 2020 and March 2021.

Companies need to heed the government’s warning and take sufficient action to ensure their own systems are fit for purpose. The pandemic only accelerated digitisation, and more of the work employees do across all sectors is digital in its nature. The rapid increase in data processing means a growing demand for increasingly powerful devices, and some businesses are struggling to keep up.

How can businesses provide employees with powerful devices in a cost-effective manner?

Upgrade systems rather than replacing them entirely.

Businesses must do all they can to ensure employees are working with functional devices, especially as remote working remains widespread across the UK. The best way to provide employees with powerful, up-to-date devices without spending vast sums of money is to upgrade devices rather than replacing them. It is also more sustainable as you’re using fewer materials; it’s a win-win!

Don’t have the expertise to upgrade devices in-house? We can help.

Older devices regularly run into a range of issues such as insufficient memory and storage, damaged ports, broken keyboards, cracked screens, and more. But many devices are salvageable with a few chosen upgrades.

We offer a range of upgrade and repair services such as SSD and HDD upgrades, storage upgrades, as well keyboard and laptop screen replacements. We have a purpose-built upgrade facility where our technicians work with your system using compatible products to make them more powerful and efficient.

Data loss is a significant problem for businesses in every sector globally. This issue can be resolved immediately with a solid data backup and archiving strategy. Data is the foundation of all businesses and is used to drive innovation. As the use of data grows exponentially in business settings, a smart backup and archiving strategy, based on the “right-sized” storage solution, is vital for all businesses.

We have summarised four important considerations when choosing an efficient backup and archiving storage system for a business setting.

Performance.

High-performing storage solutions save employees’ valuable time. For example, a Unified Storage device adds sufficient storage space to computers, and, as a result, boosts the available storage space for the many programs, applications and documents that will need to be saved onto the device, offering both file storage protocols (CIFS, NFS), and block storage protocols (FC and iSCSI). The XCubeNXT Data Backup and Archiving Solution can back up 700 terabytes per day with eight 10GBASE-T iSCSI ports in full configuration.

Availability.

Cloud services sometimes experience downtime, meaning the devices are not useable for a period of time. For example, in 2015, Amazon Web Services suffered a huge outage which affected the majority of the company’s cloud systems, including all Amazon Services, Netflix, Tinder, and IMDb. If companies rely on cloud storage services, and the cloud has an outage, data cannot be accessed. With Unified Storage, data can be accessed easily. The XCubeNXT Data Backup and Archiving Solution devices have memory cache protection, meaning that no data is lost in the memory cache when the device loses power. Built on completely redundant architecture they offer 99.9999% ultra-high availability, even online hardware upgrades for host connectivity, and memory is now possible.

Integrity.

One of the most significant benefits of Unified Storage is that data is well protected. All employees can save their data to Unified Storage systems in the knowledge that it will be protected from prying eyes. The XCubeNXT Data Backup and Archiving Solution utilises ZFS, one of the most secure file systems to date. Since the company has strong background in enterprise and government storage XCubeNXT does not have any application development backdoors, like its consumer alternatives that could potentially lead to weak spots in corporate data security. All this is just a small part of the suite of security features found in the XCubeNXT.

Budget.

Depending on the amount of storage needed, Unified Storage is a cost-effective solution as it is scalable. There is no need to worry about buying too little storage space, as capacity can be expanded by demand without downtime. For example, with the XCubeNXT Data Backup and Archiving Solution, capacity can be expanded by seven petabytes with a size limitation of single volume. The device can also remove redundant data and compress the data to make more space available.

As outlined above, Unified Storage has a wide range of benefits that can be utilised by businesses across all sectors. In this day and age, when large amounts of data are essential for businesses to effectively operate, they also need an efficient data storage solution that suits their requirements. Contact a member of our experienced team today to find out more about the Unified Storage solutions we offer. Pre-pandemic, a record number of businesses were choosing to work remotely or at least offer flexible working to their employees. As of October 2020, 24% of those employed in the UK were working remotely, mainly due to the coronavirus pandemic. When an employee starts working from home, the employer should provide them with a device that will allow them to do their job adequately. However, the task of equipping remote employees with suitable devices was a challenge for employers up and down the country.

Remote working brings new challenges

An issue that arose in March, when millions of people began working from home almost immediately, was that many did not have access to a suitable device for the work they were doing. Employers did not have sufficient time to weigh up the best options regarding devices. Many employers will have purchased affordable laptops and desktops that may not have the correct requirements for the work their employees are doing. The situation was intensified further by a temporary shortage of devices due to a sudden surge in demand and supply chain disruptions in China.

Thankfully, the supply chain problems were soon fixed and demand began to slow down. However, many employers will now be looking to replace the devices that their employees are currently using. In many cases, replacing devices completely is unnecessary. Unfortunately, approximately 49,000,000 tons of electric waste has been thrown out in 2020. That is like throwing away 800 laptops every second! Why throw away devices that are slightly damaged when they could be repaired and made more powerful by our expert team for an affordable price?

The Origin Storage Configuration Service

Our custom Configuration Services give resellers, and by extension employers, the ability to save money by having devices upgraded quickly and affordably. Our Configuration Services allow resellers to offer their customers updates to systems and/or custom repairs, which ensures that customers are getting a service that is both personalised and excellent value.
